The aim of the project of the National Federations of Associations of Physically Disabled Persons “P2P – Increasing social inclusion and active citizenship among physically disabled youngsters with the power of peer support” is to strengthen the active citizenship and social participation physically disabled youngsters in Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.

The social participation of young people with disabilities in the European Union – as research shows –  is lower than that of their non-disabled peers.

This is especially true in Eastern European countries, such as Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, where the social inclusion of people with disabilities started much later and where exclusion, prejudice, and discrimination are still part of the daily lives of young people with disabilities in key areas of their life such as education, leisure, or employment.

The partner organizations in the project will develop together a mentoring training material based on innovative, non-formal and cooperative learning techniques, which can promote the effective establishment of self-help, peer groups of physically disabled youngsters for similar NGOs and youth organizations and groups.

The developed material as a tool will contribute to the promotion of the social participation and active citizenship of physically disabilities young persons, in order to they can actively participate in those decision making process which influence their life, exercise their rights and represent their interests on the field of domestic and international youth policy.

The involved physically disabled youngsters in groups can learn from each other, help each other developing their personal skills in a safe, inclusive environment and use the strength of the community in order to take an active part in the decision-making processes that influence their life at local level, and they can take action together against discrimination.

 

Project objectives:

  • examine the social situation of physically disabled youngsters in Hungary Romania, Slovakia and assess their unsatisfied needs and social problems that they have to face on a daily basis by conducting a survey of 150 persons and 2 focus group interviews of 20 persons
  • Based on the results of the research and knowledge of the involved experts developing an innovative peer-mentor training material
  • Pilot: The training material will be tested during 3 international pilot trainings, involving 18 physically disabled youngsters
  • Follow-up: testing effectiveness of the trainings, monitoring and professional support of the work of 18 self-help groups set up by mentors, 90 people in total
  • Widespread dissemination of the results of the project, the developed method through the implementation of an online publication, social media campaign and three dissemination events
